About Bonian

Bonian Tian is one of the most compelling and vibrant Chinese cellists active on the international stage today, celebrated for his profound musical intelligence, poetic expression, and commanding stage presence. At the age of 23, he was appointed Principal Cellist of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Cologne Opera, positions he continues to hold, establishing himself as a leading figure in European orchestral life.

In 2011, he was honored with the “Art Star of China” award by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, and in 2013, he was recognized by China Central Television as one of the “Top Ten Young Cellists,” reflecting his early impact on the international music scene.

In 2012, Tian became the first Chinese cellist appointed as Professor of Cello at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in Germany, while also teaching at the Kronberg Academy and the Orchestral Training Center of the Dortmund Philharmonic, marking the beginning of a parallel path as both performer and educator.

He has since served as Guest Professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and in 2023, he was appointed Professor of Cello at Stella Vorarlberg Hochschule für Musik in Austria, becoming the first Chinese cellist to teach simultaneously at prestigious music academies in both Germany and Austria.

In 2024, he was appointed Distinguished Professor of Cello at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, and in 2025, he was recognized as a Leading Talent under the Zhejiang Overseas High-Level Talent Program. That same year, he was appointed Lifetime Professor of Cello at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, cementing his status as a leading figure in global cello performance and pedagogy.

Born in Shenyang, China, in 1986, Tian studied with Professor Jifu Wang at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music and with Professor Namu La, the renowned cellist and educator at the Central Conservatory of Music Middle School in Beijing.

He continued his studies in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin under the world-renowned cellist Prof. David Geringas, earning his Master’s degree, and later at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Prof. Frans Helmerson, obtaining the prestigious Konzertexamen in 2011.

These formative experiences laid the foundation for a career defined by both technical mastery and expressive depth.

As a soloist, Bonian Tian has collaborated with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, China NCPA Orchestra, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, Croatian National Philharmonic, Bulgarian National Symphony Orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan Philharmonic, and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed in the world’s most celebrated concert halls, from the Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna Musikverein to the Kölner Philharmonie, Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Seoul Arts Center, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. His solo performances have taken him to Germany’s most important music festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein and Rheingau Music Festivals, and in 2007 he had the honor of performing Bach’s Solo Cello Suites for Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Tian’s interpretations are noted for their rare combination of technical brilliance, emotional depth, and poetic insight, capturing both the structural clarity and expressive subtlety of the repertoire. He has shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Christoph Eschenbach, Christoph von Dohnányi, Daniel Barenboim, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, András Schiff, Steven Isserlis, Markus Stenz, François-Xavier Roth,Michael Sanderling, Shao-Chia Lü, Lü Jia, Zuohuang Chen, and Xincao Li, further demonstrating his artistic versatility and collaborative spirit.

In addition to his solo career, Tian maintains long-term engagements as Guest Principal Cellist with some of Europe’s leading orchestras, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Frankfurt Opera, Stuttgart State Opera, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra. His students have gone on to hold positions in major international orchestras and teach at prestigious music academies worldwide, reflecting his deep commitment to nurturing the next generation of cellists.

Bonian Tian’s extraordinary talent has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Youth Competition in 2002, marking a historic first for Chinese cellists, First Prize and the Special Artistic Achievement Award at the 4th Davidov International Cello Competition in 2006 (with Second Prize not awarded), Second Prize at the 4th Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition in 2008, First Prize at the George Enescu International Music Festival Cello Competition in 2011, and Second Prize at the 3rd André Navarra International Cello Competition in France in 2012.
