Minji Kim

Kim’s artistic work is defined by long-term curatorial vision rather than isolated performances. Her projects have included complete cycles of J.S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello, Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, and the complete cello sonatas of C.P.E. Bach, each conceived not merely as a concert series but as an exploration of musical language, historical context, and the evolving relationship between performer and listener. Through these projects, she has cultivated an artistic profile that combines scholarly engagement with compelling live performance.

Her repertoire spans four centuries, embracing both canonical masterworks and music that expands the expressive possibilities of the cello. Her debut recording, featuring works by Gulda, Cassadó, Hindemith, and Sollima, reflects an enduring commitment to repertoire that challenges convention while remaining deeply rooted in musical tradition.

Born in Korea, Kim studied at the Korea National University of Arts, the New England Conservatory, and the Conservatoire de Toulouse. She later became the first Asian Associate Principal Cellist of Spain’s Orquesta Reina Sofía, performing under conductors including Lorin Maazel, an experience that further broadened her artistic perspective within the international orchestral tradition.

Beyond the concert stage, Kim has become a significant voice in shaping Korea’s musical landscape. She serves as Professor of Cello at Seoul National University, where she mentors a new generation of performers while fostering critical engagement with the artistic process. As Music Director of the Seokjojeon Concert Series at Deoksugung Palace and Artistic Director of the Yeosu Eco International Music Festival, she has developed programming that encourages dialogue across disciplines, generations, and musical traditions.

At the heart of Kim’s work lies a belief that performance is an act of discovery.
