About Claudio
The German-born cellist of Peruvian-Uruguayan heritage is one of the most sought-after musicians of his instrument. His victory at the Concours de Genève in 1995, at the age of just 19, marked the beginning of his career as a soloist. An award at the Kronberg Academy’s International Pablo Casals Competition led to his international breakthrough.
Alongside his extensive international concert career, Claudio Bohórquez is also a dedicated teacher. From 2011 to 2016, he held a professorship at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts before being appointed to the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, where he had already taught regularly as a guest professor since 2003.
His orchestral engagements have taken him to some of the world’s most renowned ensembles. He has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and on tour in South America, as well as with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.

Claudio Bohórquez has also established himself as an accomplished chamber musician, performing with artists including composer and clarinettist Jörg Widmann, Daishin Kashimoto, Janine Jansen, Amihai Grosz, Lawrence Powell, Alessio Bax and Enrico Pace. He has also appeared in CelloGipfel alongside fellow cellists Jens Peter Maintz, Christian Poltéra, Wen-Sinn Yang, Nikolaus Trieb and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. In addition, he enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki.
Berlin Classics has released several recordings featuring Claudio Bohórquez and his duo partner Péter Nagy, including the Brahms sonatas and Schumann’s celebrated Dichterliebe in a version for cello and piano. His discography also includes a Piazzolla album, recorded with his brother Oscar Bohórquez and Gustavo Beytelmann, a contemporary and ensemble colleague of Piazzolla, featuring works by the legendary Argentine tango composer. Most recently, On the Shoulders of Giants, recorded with Christoph Eschenbach at the piano, was released featuring works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Anton Webern and Olivier Messiaen. Further recordings have been released on the Pentatone, Alpha Classics and Deutsche Grammophon labels.
In addition to his numerous CD recordings, radio broadcasts and television appearances, Claudio Bohórquez performed on Paul Englishby’s soundtrack for the film Ten Minutes Older – The Cello, which was screened in cinemas worldwide.
From 2015 to 2023, Claudio Bohórquez served as Artistic Director of the Schlosskonzerte and Konzerttage Winnenden. Since the 2024/25 season, he has held the same role with the Deutschordenskonzerte at the Musikfestival Neckarsulm. He has also been a long-standing member of the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin.
During the 2026/27 season, he will appear both as a soloist and chamber musician, with performances in Madrid, Bern, Hamburg, Vienna, Freiburg, Catania, Tokyo, Osaka and Bucharest.
Claudio Bohórquez plays a 1687 G. B. Rogeri cello, generously provided to him by the Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg. He performs with Larsen Sovereign.
